To deny the prevalence of innate selfish, self-seeking, hyper-individualistic, hyper-competition makes it difficult to nurture compassion. Also, I disagree with Amidon that the alleged “whole ‘interdependent co-arising’ of the phenomenal world is kind,” that kindness is intrinsic to the nature of things, that “enormous currents of kindness and benevolence [carry] us along.” The material world is indifferent to humans.
